Give me liberty or give me death. – Patrick Henry
This oft-quoted line in the sand of the American Revolution is well remembered. What is not so remembered is the context of Henry’s words. In the current circumstances where the removal of any mention of religion, especially Christianity, is trumphet as a example of freedom within our public schools, we see that even history has lost its rightful context. It is no wonder that so few now know the framework of this most absolute statement in defense of liberty. As a service to a better public education and restitution of our historical memory, here is Patrick Henry’s full statement.
An appeal to arms and the God of hosts is all that is left us. But we shall not fight our battle alone. There is a just God that presides over the destinies of nations. The battle sir, is not of the strong alone. Is life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it almighty God. I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death.
That is what the “eastern elites” of early America said and stood for. Oh, how far they have fallen. Considering that I have been doing a Knowing God study on Thursdays on this blog, I would venture in light of our last study in Chapter 2: People Who Know Their God, that Patrick Henry knew his God. I think Dr. Packer would agree that Patrick knew Him very well indeed, finding his strength for such a firm stand in the Everlasting Arms.
