Lent 2021 Day 21 – The Unexpected Life

Did any of us expect to be where we are, doing what we are doing at this time in our life? I would venture very few of us could say that. I know I can’t. I also cannot say God didn’t warn me that I am not in control of things. In James 4:13-15, it says, “13Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into this or that town and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.14You do not know about tomorrow. What is your life like? For you are a puff of smoke that appears for a short time and then vanishes. 15You ought to say instead, “If the Lord is willing, then we will live and do this or that.”

I never expected to be still working full time while approaching my 74th birthday, but I am. There is a good side to working, I really enjoy my job and like the people I am working with. The pay doesn’t hurt either. One thing I have considered for a long time was whether retirement is biblical. God told Adam in Genesis 3:19 “By the sweat of your brow you will eat food until you return to the ground…” For me that says I will work until I die. There is no option for retirement in that verse. Think about that for a while. Apparently, there is no coasting as a child of God.

I am fortunate that since I do technical work for the government, they don’t care how old I am as long as I get the job done. Fortunately, my skill set is in high demand and it is hard to find people with clearances that can do what I do. So, I guess that means working as long as I am able.
